Spartans Chosen as Co-Favorites in UAA Football Preseason Coaches’ Poll

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The Case Western Reserve University football team has been selected as a co-favorite in the 2012 University Athletic Association Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Spartans have won four of the past five UAA Championships including last season.

Washington University (Mo.), runner-up in 2011, received one first-place vote, while the Spartans received two. The University of Chicago (Ill.) picked up the other first-place vote and tied for third in the poll with Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.).

"Our goals for the season always begin with winning the UAA," said ninth-year Head Coach Greg Debeljak. "The competition level within the conference has developed into the toughest during my time here, and we know it's crucial to be at our very best for each game. As we've seen in the past several years, it only takes a few plays during key moments to determine whether a team goes 3-0 or 0-3 in the UAA."

In addition to four UAA Championships in five seasons, the Spartans (9-1 overall, 3-0 UAA in 2011) boast an overall record of 48-6 during that span. Of the 27 lettermen back from last year's group, Case returns five starters on offense, seven on defense and one on special teams.

The Spartans open the season on the road on Saturday, September 1 versus Marietta College at 7:00 p.m. at Don Drumm Stadium.

Yeowomen Soccer is Ready to Break Through in 2012

Oberlin, Ohio – The core of young talent coupled with a strong veteran leadership group has many Oberlin faithful excited about the 2012 women’s soccer team.

The Yeowomen, who open the season on August 31 at St. Vincent College, are led by senior co-captain and All-NCAC playerHannah Combe. A dynamic player who has the skills to control the entire game from her midfield position, Combe is looking to have her best season yet in 2012. She is the team’s top returning point producer, having finished with four assists and two goals for eight total tallies.

Local Oberlin native Abby Weiss will also be heavily relied on to become one of the team’s top goal scorers. As a rookie she cashed in three scores to go along with one assist. She also finished second on the team in shots (38) and shots on goal (19). Another sophomore that Head Coach Kristen Hayden hopes to step up is Megan Michel. The Ashland, Ohio, native netted two goals a season ago while playing in all 19 games, making eight starts.

Senipr co-captain Angie Garcia also provides great leadership up front from her forward position and hopes to use her speed to become an top scoring threat for the Yeowomen.

“We are going to count on Hannah and Angie to lead our team both on and off the field,” Coach Hayden said. “With this young team we certainly believe they have the makeup to do so, but with that being said they can’t do it alone so we are also going to expect big things from our underclassmen as well.”

After an outstanding first season that saw her lead the NCAC in saves with 132, Kate Frost returns to control net for the Yeowomen. She logged over 1,730 minutes in the cage in 2011 and has all of the potential to become an elite keeper within the conference.

In front of Forst onthe backline is the junior tandem of Sarah Andrews and Sarah Orbuch, both of whom are hard-nosed players. Sophomore Kate Hanick is also a tenacious defender and will do nothing but bolster the defensive unit.

Despite being young, the Yeowomen are still highly experienced which will help first-years Tricia SouzaAmethyst CareyHelen Huizenga, and Sarah Willete adjust to the college game.

“They are all strong players with exceptional leadership qualities,” Hayden said about her rookie class. “They all have different strengths and I expect to see some highlights coming from this group of players.”

After their season opener on the road, the Yeowomen have a stretch of three home games at Fred Shults Field starting with Baldwin Wallace on September 4. They will begin conference play on September 29 at 1 p.m. when Wittenberg comes to town.

Yeowomen fans should also note that all home match with be streamed online free of charge on goyeo.com. All matches will also future live in-game statistics.
