Named as NGCA All-American Scholars

BEREA, OHIO --  Baldwin Wallace University juniors to-be-seniors Brooke Hamilton (Cleveland/ St Joseph Academy) and Rebecca Kapusta (Independence) have been named as 2011-12 National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar recipients for their efforts this past season. This is the second straight season that Hamilton has been recognized by the NGCA.

“We are extremely proud of Brooke and Rebecca,” said second-year Head Coach Alyson Campbell, who has led the Yellow Jackets to back-to-back Ohio Athletic Conference titles and a spot in the NCAA Division III National Tournament.  “Both young women have their priorities in the right place and are outstanding Student/Athletes.

“Both Brooke and Rebecca are excellent students in the classroom, leaders on our campus and on the golf course and exemplify the true meaning of a Division III Student/Athlete,” continued Campbell. They are strong role models for our younger student-athletes to emulate. The nice part is that both return next year and we look forward to their leading us to another great season.”

Hamilton, who carries a 3.95 grade average in English and philosophy, was a 2012 CAPITAL ONE Academic All-American and an NCAA Division III “Elite 89” nominee at the 2012 NCAA Division III National Golf Championships. The 2-time All-OAC and 2-time Academic All-OAC At-Large selection played in seven spring tournaments and averaged 85.71 strokes in 14 rounds of 18 holes, including tying her career-low of 79 twice at the Div. III National Tournament (third and fourth rounds). Hamilton is a member of four honor societies, the receipient of three academic scholarships and serves as a team captain. She also is a Jacket Scholar, a 2-time CAPITAL ONE Academic All-District choice and was a 2011 NGCA All-American Scholar.

Kapusta, a special education major who carries a 3.87 grade point average, was the No.3 player and averaged 86.6 strokes en route to her second straight All-OAC and second consecutive Academic All-OAC honor. She highlighted her season by shooting a career-low 77 at the Trine (Ind.) University Tournament to earn medalist and subsequent OAC Player of the Week honors. In the classroom, Kapusta is a Dean’s List student, Jacket Scholar and member of the Student/Athlete Advisory Committee. She is a member of the Alpha Lambda and Chi Sigma Alpha honor societies, served as a lead fundraiser for the BW Dance Marathon to benefit the Glaser Foundation for Pediatric Aids, won a Leadership Award this spring that was sponsored by Student/Athlete Services, participates in the Newman Center Student Ministry, is a Student Ambassador for the admission office and is involved with the BW Chapter of Circle K International.
Oberlin Women's Soccer Announces 2012 Incoming Class 

Oberlin, Ohio – Oberlin College Head Women’s Soccer Coach Kristen Hayden announced her incoming freshman class on Friday afternoon.

“Each of these players are valuable additions to our team,” Hayden said. “They all have a strong soccer skill set that we are looking to build upon in the coming years. I can’t wait for them to get here and get aquatinted with our team.”

Scored the first-ever goal in Stuart Country history last season … Was a member of the Club Ewing Girls Soccer Association where she was a part of an undefeated team and a team that finished third overall in the league … She is holds 11 school records in track and field and is part of the relay team that won the state championship in the 4x100 last year.

Non-Athletics Info:
Was a member of the school choir and worked as a stage manager for the Upper School of Music … A chairman of the spirit committee, Carney has also worked as a reporter for the school newspaper and enjoys doing community service.

High School: Fairview High School (Boulder, CO)
Intended Major: English

Athletics Info:
As a senior Willette helped Fairview reach the semifinals of the 5A Colorado State Tournament … A former co-captain and Offensive MVP, Willete helped her club team, Boulder County Force, finish second in the Classic 2 Division in 2010 … In addition to soccer, she also plays ruby and lacrosse.

Was the recipient of Fairview’s English Department Scholarship and served on the school’s diversity panel.

Name: Helena Huizenga
High School: Greater Atlanta Christian School (Duluth, GA)

As team captain, Huizenga helped guide her squad to the 2012 AA state title after finishing second overall in 2011 ... A member of the 2010 Regional Championship team, Huizenga also earned the Spartan Spirit Award and the 2012 Ray Kroc Award which is award to the graduating senior who best exhibits the qualities of leadership, scholarship, citizenship, and sportsmanship.

A Summa Cum Laude graduate, she was the secretary for the National Honor Society and a junior board member for the Atlanta Mission.

Name: Tricia Souza
High School: Columbus North High School (Columbus, IN)
Intended Major: Undecided

Athletics Info:
Souza missed all of the 2011 season with an injury, but the midfielder scored three goals with six assists in 2010 as the Bull Dogs went 17-6-2 and were state runners-up that season … She also played basketball for two seasons.

Non-Athletics Info:
Off of the pitch, Souza was part a part of the show choir and theatre … Additionally she was a member of the student government and National Honors Society.

Crushers begin series with Southern Illinois tonight

FIRST ‘UPS’-There is only one thing that is hotter than the temperatures here on the North Coast and that is the Lake Erie Crushers! Thursday night at All Pro Freight Stadium,the Men of Crush completed a three-game sweep of the London Rippers using two big innings then held on to a 6-5 victory their fourth straight and tenth in their last eleven games to move three games over the .500 mark.


The Red,Black,and white have also turned around their fortunes at home winning eleven of their last thirteen games at the intersection of Interstate 90 & Ohio Route 611.The All-Star break is almost here, but before that, the Crushers have a crucial three-game series with the Southern Illinois Miners currently holding the second playoff spot in the Eastern Division.The opener pits RHP ALEX LOFTIN making his first start at home in search of his third win since joining the team from the Akron Zips while the Miners counter with RHP BRIAN FOWLER who will be looking for his fourth win of 2012

CRUSHERS-MINERS LIFETIME:Tonight’s game is the first of six regular-season meetings between the two clubs…even though they are division rivals this is Southern Illinois’ lone visit to Avon in 2012…They will meet on the final series of the season (August 31-September 2) at Rent One Ballpark in Marion…LAST SEASON the Miners swept all six games from the Crushers including the three at All Pro from June 10-12…Lake Erie’s last win in the series was August 22,2010 sweeping a doubleheader at All Pro 2-1 & 3-1…IN THE ALL-TIME SERIES Southern Illinois leads 13-5


LAST NIGHT-The Crushers completed a three-game sweep of the London Rippers 6-5 scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning with the big hit being a three-run homer by SS ANDREW DAVIS.The visitors from across Lake Erie chipped away at the deficit tying the game in the game in the top of the fourth.In the bottom of the fifth,the Crushers got their winning runs thanks to an RBI single by LF DANIEL BOWMAN and an RBI infield single from 2B J.C. FIGUEROA who came into the game as a defensive replacement.RHP ERIC GONZALEZ-DIAZ (4-4) evened his overall record pitching five innings allowing four runs on eight hits while RHP JONATHAN KOUNTIS celebrated his selection to the All-Star team getting the final four outs for his ninth save of the season

IN HIS SIGHTS-Manager JOHN MASSARELLI is currently tied for second on the Frontier League all-time managerial wins list with 411. GET OUT THE BROOMS-The Crushers picked up their third sweep of the season last night with their win over London. Their previous two have come at home against Washington (Jun 11-13) and River City (Jun 27-29)


HEADING TO NORMAL-The Crushers announced before the game Thursday that they will have one more player heading to the 2012 Frontier League All Star Game presented by State Farm as RHP JONATHAN KOUNTIS will join LHP PAUL FAGAN and DH RUSSELL MOLDENHAUER at The Corn Crib


KOUNTIS is 1-2 on the season with a 0.63 ERA picking up his ninth save of the season last night getting the final four outs in the 6-5 win over the Rippers…of the 115 batters he has faced so far this season only 16 have reached base…A native of Akron (Firestone High School) Kountis was a 42nd round pick of the Indians in the June,2009 draft put pitched three seasons at Ohio Dominican University where he was 20-9.For his senior season,he pitched Emery-Riddle College in Daytona,Beach Florida where he was 7-4 with a 3.27 ERA…Was a 19th round pick of the New York Mets in he June ,2010 draft pitching with the Kingsport Mets (A-Appalanchian League) and with the Brooklyn Cyclones (A-New York/Penn League) in 2011 pitchedd in Kingsport had no record with a 15.19ERA
