BHS GIRLS LACROSSE Earns Highest 

Spring Sports Team GPA among 

Student/Athletic teams in Beachwood


Congratulations to the Beachwood High School Girls Lacrosse team for obtaining the highest cumulative grade point average among Student/Athletic teams in the school for the Spring sports' season. 

The Lady Bison Girls' Lacrosse team, which has 34 members, ranked first ahead of six other high school Spring teams. Their cumulative grade point average is 3.4. This also marks the highest cumulative GPA among all 22 high school sports teams during the 2010-2011 school year. 

"Winning more games than ever and improving our goals scored and goals against differential by 40% this year was a thrill," says head coach Jen Tramer. Hearing that these same 34 girl's earned top honors as having the highest team cumulative GPA was the icing on the cake! Being an athlete is wonderful, being a good student is fantastic, but being a successful student-athlete is the most fun of all!"

The Boy's Tennis team finished with the highest GPA during the final quarter of the school year, with a 3.41 GPA. 

The Beachwood High School Girls Tennis team takes the top honor for the 2010-2011 school year with a 3.741 GPA during their season's grading period.

BMS ATHLETES RECEIVE TOP ATHLETIC HONORS 

The Beachwood City Schools recognized 11 middle school student athletes at its 8th grade promotion ceremony last week. These awards were voted on by the coaches and school administrators.

Caroline Stern  (Tennis, Basketball, Softball) and Max Balazs (Football, Wrestling, Baseball) received the OHSAA Archie Griffin Award, which is presented to the to one male and one female middle school student athlete that demonstrates outstanding traits of sportsmanship and leadership and represents the school district with honor and class.

Brad Tramer (Cross Country, Basketball, Track) and Valisha Watkins (Volleyball, Basketball, Track) received the Coaches Award, which is presented to the student athletes that are deemed the most athletic in the 8th grade.

Cameron Leathers Clayborne (Volleyball/Basketball) and Wynn Hines (Football, Basketball, Track) received the Beachwood Bison Booster Award which is awarded to the two 8th grade student athletes demonstrates the most team and school spirit and is shows exemplary team leadership.

The Middle School Baseball team was awarded the Marc Joseph Memorial Award, which is presented to the 8th grade team that had the higest winning percentage for the 2010-2011 school year. 

The 8th grade baseball players that were recognized at the ceremony were: Matthew Alix, Max Balazs, Matt Komich, Bradley Smith, and Brandon Teitelbaum.

Hoover High alumna Jessica Simpson 

earns Academic All MAC for Miami

CLEVELAND – The Mid-American Conference announced its All-Academic Softball team on Wednesday. Representing Miami was junior pitcher Jessica Simpson (North Canton, Ohio).

 It is the first MAC academic honor of her career.

Simpson had one of the greatest seasons in Miami history. She was 27-15 overall with a 1.57 ERA, and become the first Miami pitcher to earn the Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Year Award.

She was also named First Team All-MAC and Second Team All-Mideast Region by the NFCA. Simpson threw 15 shutouts, which ranked in a tie for second in the nation. She also set a school record with 317strikeouts, which ranked 10th in the nation.

 Her season was highlighted by her first career no-hitter against Northern Illinois on May 6. Simpson was named MAC East Division Pitcher of the Week a record seven times this season.

Juniors Jordan McElroy (Marion, Ark.) and Daniela Torres (Harwood Heights, Ill.) were also honored by the MAC with spots on the honorable mention squad.

Miami finished the season 32-22 overall and 13-9 in MAC play. The RedHawks went 2-2 in the conference tournament, overcoming a loss to Ohio by defeating Northern Illinois and Ball State, before eventually being eliminated by Central Michigan.
