Three members of the Ohio University softball team were named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) Team on Wednesday. The trio included seniors Melissa Bonner (Kings Mills, Ohio) and Emily Wethington (New Palestine, Ind.) and junior Jillian Van Wagnen (Lorain, Ohio). In total, nine Bobcats were honored, which tied for the top spot in the conference with Bowling Green.

This was the first time Van Wagnen was selected to the All Academic team in the loop.

This spring she capped off her junior season starting in 48 of 49 games at center field, seeing 118 appearances at the plate and finishing with 22 runs, 27 hits, seven RBIs and one triple on the year

She also led the team in stolen bases with 22 on 24 attempts. She went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in a 7-2 win over Northern Illinois (4/15). She went 2-for-3 with a RBI in a 5-4 win over rival Miami in the opening round of the MAC Tournament (5/11). The junior finished with a .272 on base pct., a .982 fielding pct., and a .246 slugging pct.

Last year, Van Wagnen, an athletic outfielder,  played in 29 games, starting all of them. She finished with an overall batting average of .316, (.333 in MAC conference play), as well as a .351 slugging percentage, (.333 in MAC play).

She recorded a total of 18 hits, three RBI, and two doubles and led the team in steal attempts with 17 and shared most stolen bases with teammate Shalene Petrich. Defensively, she held the fourth best fielding percentage with a .974 overall.

 Van Wagnen loaded the stat book in a win against Longwood (2/28) when she went 3-for-3 with one double, two runs, and a season high three stolen bases. She stole two more bases the next game against Tennessee (3/8) and performed well in a doubleheader against #21 Ohio State (3/31), going 5-for-6 overall with one RBI, one double, and two more stolen bases. She finished the regular season strong with a 3-game hit streak against Akron and Western Michigan (4/3-4/9,).


At the now defunct Admiral King, Van Wagnen Graduated in the top five percent of her high school class.. On the field, she  tallied a .535 batting average, 1.141 slugging percentage, .566 on-base percentage, 33 RBIs, eight home runs and 14 stolen bases her senior season  with the Admirals.




Hoban High alumna Maura Bulgrin earns 

Academic All District honors, running for 

and studying at Dayton

DAYTON, Ohio – University of Dayton track and field standouts Ashley Cattran and Emily Zimmerman have been selected as Capital One/ CoSIDA Academic All-District IV First Team members. Maura Bulgrin was selected to the All-District Second Team.

Cattran was a second team Academic All-American® last season. She finished in the Top 10 in every event this outdoor season except for one. She was also the A-10’s Women’s Indoor Track and Field Student/Athlete Of The Year  this year and carries a 3.989 GPA.  The senior from Centerville, Ohio was the 2010 Outdoor Track Student/Athlete of the Year. She placed first in the distance medley relay at the A-10 Indoor Championships and was third in the 800 meters. Cattran was also selected to the A-10’s Academic All-Conference team for the indoor and outdoor seasons.

Zimmerman earned A-10 Second Team All-Conference accolades at the 2011 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championship after finishing second in the 10,000-meter run and eighth in the 5,000-meter run. She also set a school record in the 5K with a time of 16:42.10 at the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships. Zimmerman holds the 10K school record with a time of 34:56.66, which she set at the NCAA Division I East Prelims.

The Dayton, Ohio native earned the Flyers’ Most Improved Runner Award. She is majoring in adolescence to young adult education and foreign language education while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average and was the A-10’s Student/Athlete of the Year during the 2011 outdoor season.

Bulgrin has a 3.719 GPA and was the A-10 Indoor Champion in 3000 meters, 5000 meters and distance medley.  She finished in third place in the 1500 meters, third in the 4x800, fourth in the 5K at the A-10 Outdoor Championships. The Munroe Falls, Ohio native was a member of the A-10’s Academic All-Conference Team for the indoor and outdoor seasons.

With their selections to the Academic All-District First Team, Cattran and Zimmerman are now eligible for Academic All-America® honors. Capital One Academic All-America® voting will take place next week in voting conducted by the members of the College Sports Information Directors Association.

Last year, Bulgrin continued to be an important part of the UD track team. She ended her indoor season with the ninth-best time in the conference for the One-Mile Run. She also posted the second-best conference mark in the 3,000 Meter Run with a time of 9:47.44. 

She controlled the sixth best time for the 5,000 Meter Run. At the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships she would take the top spot in the 5,000 Meters being named All-Conference. 

Her success indoors was followed with success outsides she posted the third best conference time in the 1,500 Meter Run and also in the 5,000 Meters. She was able to take a third place finish in the 10,000 meters as well as a sixth place finish in the 5,000 meters.
