Hiram College Rallies to Defeat

Baldwin-Wallace; Terriers Advance to

Regional Championship Round

May 14, 2011

By Jeff Hoedt

ADRIAN, MICH. – After resuming the lightning suspended game yesterday trailing 4-2, the Hiram College softball team scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when play resumed today (Saturday, May 14) to defeat Baldwin-Wallace College, 5-4, in the regionals of the NCAA Division III Tournament hosted by Adrian College in Adrian, Mich. [Game Stats]

With the win, the Terriers advance to the regional championship round and are now 27-12 overall. Hiram’s 27 wins also ties the school record for most wins in a season. The last time the Terriers posted 27 victories was in 2009 when Hiram finished 27-16. The Yellow Jackets fall to 28-10 overall for the season with the loss.

Prior to the game being postponed yesterday due to lightning, B-W took the early lead scoring a run in the top of the first inning and then added another run in the third for a 2-0 margin.

Hiram cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the fifth on a defensive error that allowed junior All-NCAC outfielder Kristen Cooney (North Lewisburg/Triad) to score. The Yellow Jackets added to their lead in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs to make the score 4-1.

Hiram scored its first run of the sixth on a solo homerun by freshman shortstop Jessica Bolanz (Randolph/Waterloo), her team-leading sixth of the season, to narrow the gap to 4-2.

Following a single by freshman All-NCAC pitcher/utility player Alyssa Lane (Randolph/Waterloo), the game would be suspended due to lightning with a runner on base and one out for the Terriers.

L to R -- Lane, Cooney, Langland

When play resumed, Hiram recorded a quick out, but then tallied two consecutive base hits to load the bases with two outs. Freshman outfielder Sarah Loyer (Barrie, Ontario/St. Joseph’s) singled scoring two runs to tie the game, but a throwing error by B-W on the same play allowed a third run to score and gave Hiram a 5-4 edge.

The Yellow Jackets would come to bat in the seventh looking for a rally of their own, but solid defense by Hiram led by Lane, got B-W to record three straight outs securing a 5-4 come-from-behind victory for the Terriers.

Hiram finished the game with 10 hits and was led by Lane and junior All-Region utility player Kelly Langland (Batavia/McNicholas) who both finished with a pair of hits. Lane went two-of-three at the plate and Langland finished two-of-four overall. Six other Terriers each recorded a hit in the win.

On the mound, Lane pitched all seven innings and knotched her 15th win of the season and is now 15-7 overall. She allowed four runs on five hits and struck out six batters. With her six strikeouts today, Lane now has 139 for the season which is a Hiram single-season record. She surpasses former softball standout Whitney Dropsey ’10 who held the previous mark with 137 strikeouts which she set during the 2009 season.

Hiram will advance to the regional championship round and will face top-seeded DePauw (Ind.) University later today at 2 p.m. The Terriers need two more victories to advance to the NCAA Division III Softball World Series.

B-W Softball Team Falls to Trine (Ind.), 6-5, in NCAA Regional

Tournament Elimination Game; Ends Season at 28-11 Overall

ADRIAN, MICH. – The third-seed Baldwin-Wallace College softball team was defeated by fourth-seeded and 24th-ranked Trine University, 6-5, today (Saturday, May 14) in an elimination game at the eight-team NCAA Central Region Tournament hosted by Adrian College at the Adrian Softball Field.

The Yellow Jackets fell to the loser’s bracket after suffering a 5-4 loss to Hiram College this morning in a game that was suspended from last night. With the loss, B-W ends the season 28-11 overall and tied the school-record for most wins a season. Trine improves to 29-12 and advances in the loser’s bracket to play #19 Alma (Mich.) College today at 4:00 p.m.

After a scoreless first two innings, Trine jumped out to take a 4-0 lead in the third and increased their lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning.

However, the Yellow Jackets would fight back and cut the Trine lead to 5-3 in the sixth inning thanks to four Trine errors. B-W held Trine scoreless in the bottom of the sixth. In the top of the seventh, senior first baseman Katrina Resek (Strongsville) started the inning off with a walk. Freshman leftfielder Ashley Elber (Huron/Edison) then tied the game at 5-5 with a two-run homerun to straight away centerfield. The homerun was Elber’s team-leading seventh of the season.

But, in the bottom half of the seventh, Trine won the game on a bases loaded single up the middle by Haleigh Daniels.

River’s James Meyer adds sectional

singles tennis title to go with his four

league titles; an All-CVCA doubles final

had Konstan brothers playing against each

other; split up of Bay’s Johnson twins gets

one of them to districts

ROCKY RIVER – For the singles championship match of the Division II tennis sectionals here at the Force Fitness Center Saturday, it was almost like Miami University (OH) playing the University of Miami in a Student/Athletic event as Rocky River senior James Meyer was pitted against Caleb Mayer of Lake Ridge Academy for all the marbles and a No. 1 seed in next week’s Canton District.

Sectional Singles Champ James Meyer

In the Mayer-Meyer “tongue-twister” match, No. 1 seed James Meyer prevailed over the rookie, 6-0, 6-2.

Meyer has been working to get a monkey off his back. The four-time West Shore Conference singles champion finished third in the sectional last year, and finished fifth in the district three times, once in doubles and twice in singles, just missing State’s by one match.

Also a member of River’s basketball team that made it to the regional finals, Meyer just missed going to state in the other sport just two months ago.

Now he goes in as the No. 1 seed in the district and in a better position to grab one of the four qualifying spots for States in two weeks.

Mayer, a freshman, is brand new to high school tennis and also to school buildings, as he was home schooled his first nine years of student-hood.

In the semis, Mayer topped No. 2 seed Chaz Hansen, 6-1, 6-2, to play Meyer, who won over CVCA’s Mason Blake, 6-0, 6-1, to get to the title match.

Hansen will go to districts as a No. 3 seed after clubbing Blake in two sets in the consolation match for third place.

Will Konstan (L) and Mike Stoddard

It was an all-CVCA tennis doubles final when brothers Lou Konstan and Will Konstan faced each other in the championship match.

Playing as a doubles team in 2009-10, the Konstan brothers finished third in the state, but the decision to change up this season stemmed more from Lou and Alex Aleman both being seniors this season.

Alex Aleman (L) and Lou Konstan (R)
Two years ago, Aleman and Konstan won state as sophomores and also playing together as a doubles team this first year of high school for both.

It was Lou and Aleman, the No. 1 seed, with the championship win over Will Konstan and Mike Stoddard, but both CVCA teams will go to Canton next week as top seeds in the upper lines of the brackets of the sub alignments.

The Aleman-Konstan team beat Fairview’s Cass Stadnik and Cole Ziegler in the semis to get the championship match. The Stoddard-Konstan team toppled Bay’s Dan Johnson and Peter Scanniello in the semis to get to the final.
