CSU Finishes Second in McCafferty Cup

CLEVELAND, Ohio - On the strength of five runner-up finishes during the 2011-12 season, Cleveland State finished second in the James J. McCafferty Trophy standings which determine the Horizon League all-sport champion.

The Vikings, who had runner-up finishes in volleyball, men's and women's swimming and diving and men's and women's tennis, totaled 39 points to finish behind Milwaukee, which won the McCafferty Cup with 45.5 points.

It is CSU's best finish since winning the McCafferty Cup in 2007-08.

The Vikings tied for second place among men's sports with Milwaukee with 19 points, two behind men's sport champion Valparaiso.

On the women's side, CSU amassed 20 points, finishing in third place behind Milwaukee (26.5) and Butler (24).

Named in honor of James J. McCafferty, who served as the conference's first commissioner from 1979-80, the McCafferty Trophy is awarded annually by the Horizon League to a member institution compiling the greatest number of performance points, based on their finish in the League's 19 championship sports.

For the sports of men's and women's soccer, volleyball, men's and women's basketball, softball and baseball, points are awarded based on combined regular-season (60 percent) and championship (40 percent) finishes. For all other sports, points are based on performance in the League championships.

Written and Researched by Evan Meyer – Sports Vault

FIRST ‘UPS’-The Lake Erie Crushers squandered a pair of one-run leads Tuesday morning as they fell to the defending Frontier League Champion Joliet Slammers 3-2 before the largest crowd ever to see the Red,Black, and White play at All Pro Freight Stadium.

Tonight the Men from the South Shore look to even the series and get that elusive first home win as RHP ERIC GONZALEZ-DIAZ takes to the bump for the home team while former college standout RHP STEVEN MAXWELL takes to the mound for the team that is the home of Jake & Elwood Blues along with the real life ‘Rudy’
