BEREA -- Freshman third singles player Rebecca Mittler (Elyria/ Catholic) won the deciding match as the Baldwin-Wallace College women's tennis team defeated rival Otterbein College, 5-4, today (Saturday, May 8, 2010) in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament championship match at the world-renown Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio. The Yellow Jackets have now won three OAC Tournament titles in the past four years.

Mittler, who lost the first set 6-4, came back to beat Otterbein's Megan Asterino 6-4 in the second set and then dominated the final set with a 6-1 victory.  With her victory, Mittler improves to 15-9 overall.

B-W improves to 18-7 overall with a school-record 15 straight wins and earns the OAC's automatic berth to the 2010 NCAA Division III National Tournament which begins next weekend with regional play.  The Cardinals end their season at 18-5 overall.

For the second time this season, the B-W and Otterbein match came down to a third-set tie-breaker. The first time, the Yellow Jackets won on April 28 when junior Academic All-OAC player and No.6 player Katy Marshall (Medina/ Senior) scored the deciding point on her birthday.'

The Yellow Jackets took a 2-1 lead in doubles as the No.1 duo of junior Caitlyn Pecinovsky (Whitehall/   Columbus Bishop Hartley) and Mittler (Elyria Catholic) won, 8-6, and the No.2 tandem of junior No.4 singles player Emily Pelosi (Uniontown/ Green) and sophomore No.2 player Jenny Greene (Worthington/ Thomas Worthington) won, 9-8 with a 9-7 tie-breaker.  With their wins, Pecinovsky and Mittler are now 15-12 overall at No.1 and Pelosi and Greene are 13-10 overall at No.2.  Despite their loss at third doubles, senior No.5 singles player Andrea Essig (Ashtabula/ Edgewood) and Marshall are 14-10 overall.

In singles play, Pecinovsky opened with a 6-2 and 6-4 win at No. 1 to improve to 15-9 this season and Greene followed with a 6-3 and 6-4 victory at No. 2. to improve to 12-12 overall and to open a 4-1 Yellow Jacket advantage. Undaunted, Otterbein rallied to tie the score at 4-4 with wins at No. 5, then No. 4 and then No. 6 singles.  That set up the three-set win by Mittler and she triumphed, 4-6, 6-4 and 6-1.  In addition, Pelosi is 18-5 at No.4, Essig is 10-14 at No.5 and Marshall is 18-7 at No.6.

Alliance, Ohio - May 7, 2010 - The Heidelberg University baseball team closed out its 2010 regular season with an Ohio Athletic Conference sweep of Mount Union College at 23rd Street Field in Alliance, Ohio today, May 7. The Berg won game one 9-4 and returned in game two to post an 11-4 victory. The sweep gave Heidelberg its fifth OAC Regular Season Title in the history of the program (2003, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010), all of which have came under the guidance of head coach Matt Palm. Since the inception of the league regular season trophy in 2000, the Berg has the second most titles, just one behind Marietta College. 

Cleveland area products Jason Lash, Elvin Williams, Canton's Will Brechen and Chagrin's Alex Monroe all were instrumental in the win over Mount Union.

Toledo-- Three Oberlin College track and field athletes competed at the University of Toledo’s Tune-up meet in effort to increase their season-best marks.

Lorain, Ohio native Shawn Chrapczynski was the only person to do so as he stopped the clock at 22.42 in the 200-meter dash to finish third overall while shaving off seven one-hundredths of a second off of his time of 22.49 that he posted at last week’s NCAC Championships.

Also competing at the meet for Oberlin was senior Seth Wimberly who placed second in the 400 meters at 49.56, but the timestamp was a little shy of his conference performance of 49.41. 

First-year Marissa Clardy checked in fifth in the 400 meters at 59.12, but was well off her conference-winning time of 57.66. 

The Oberlin harriers will have a final chance to improve upon their marks at next weekend’s Allegheny Invite.

ADA - The third-seeded John Carroll softball team upset No. 4-ranked and top-seeded Ohio Northern to win the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament at the ONU Softball Field today afternoon.

John Carroll improves to 26-15 and wins their first OAC Tournament in program history, never finishing better than third in the past.

Ohio Northern falls to 37-5 overall, but gains a berth into the NCAA Tournament by finishing first in the regular season and advancing to the Tournament finals.

Sophomore Michelle Murphy led the way for JCU by going 2-for-3 with two home runs, three RBIs and three runs scored.

Sophomore Jackie Mangola hit her eleventh homer of the year as she went 2-for-4 while senior Cortney Cash went 2-for-2 with two doubles, an RBI and a walk.

John Carroll got on the board first, scoring two runs in each of the third and fourth innings.

In the third, Murphy led off the inning with her fifth home run of the season. Senior Julie Marlowe singled and advanced to third on an error and a sacrifice bunt before scoring on an RBI single by sophomore Erin Riccardi.

The following inning, junior Angela Vistocco led off with a double and scored on Murphy’s second homer in as many innings, pushing the JCU lead to 4-0.

ONU answered back in the fifth. After reaching second on a fielder’s choice and an error, freshman Chrissy Rankin scored on an RBI double by senior Cortney Cash. Sophomore Jackie Mangola then hit her second home run of the day to cut the lead to 4-3.

With the help of three Northern errors, JCU was able to score three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to push the lead to 7-3. Marlowe picked up the only RBI of the inning on an infield single.

Sophomore Maggie Molnar tossed 2 1/3 innings in relief allowing no earned runs (three unearned) on just two hits and a walk while striking out three.

BEREA -- The Ohio Northern University men's tennis team defeated Baldwin-Wallace College, 5-3, today (Saturday, May 8, 2010) in the championship match of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.  The victory qualified the Polar Bears for next week's NCAA Division III National Tournament.

With its win, ONU is now 19-2 overall while B-W ends its season at 19-4 overall.  Despite the loss, B-W has won 18 or matches in each of the past nine years, including five 20-win seasons. The combined seven-year record is an amazing 178-31 with an .852 winning percentage and includes OAC regular season and OAC Tournament titles in 2004 and 2005.
